JUST CALL ME MAGGIE

We all know that while ordering a drink at Starbucks, there is a chance that your name may be mis-spelled and it is funny to joke about it with your co-workers. “Oh my gosh they spelled my name with a ‘q!’! Says Jaclyn. Or, “Silly barista added an ‘h’!” claims Sara. I have known about this common mistake for years, even before I was an avid Starbucks goer. I always found it quite comical to hear coffee drinkers point it out because, well quite frankly, who cares!

Anyway, it wasn’t until last year when I joined the bandwagon and started getting my daily drink at Starbucks. I have never been a fan of coffee but immediately fell in love with Chai Tea. Mmm. The best thing is that you can enjoy it iced in the summer and hot in the winter. Perfection 🙂

I didn’t realize that Starbucks had a “lingo.” For months I would order my drink differently every day. Examples:

Tall Soy Chai Tea Latte

Tall Chai Tea Latte with Soy Milk

Tall Chai Soy Latte

I went to the exact same location every morning and the same barista took my order every day, but it got to a point that I realized I would actually get nervous to order because I was beginning to notice that I didn’t think I was ordering correctly. I was disappointed that the employees seemed to remember everyone else’s names and drink orders but it was like I was a new customer coming in for the first time every day!

Then it dawned on me. One of my roommates from college used to be a barista at Starbucks and it was time for me to ask her for help! Becky came to the rescue and quickly explained that yes, there is a lingo and if you don’t abide by the Starbucks way, you will continue to be an outcast. 😉 Becky texted me back with three small words that changed my life forever. “tall.soy.chai.”

That’s it?? I walked into Starbucks the very next day with a new found confidence. I ordered that drink and guess what, the next day they remembered, and the day after that, they remembered! And later that week I was greeted with a “Hello, Megan, Tall Soy Chai today?”

Last week, I ran downstairs to get a drink instead of going to my “regular” Starbucks spot and decided to get an iced tall soy chai (really went out on a limb and was hoping that I placed “ice” in the correct spot) and was pleased to see that the drink order was correct. Then I noticed “Maggie” clearly spelled on the cup instead of Megan. Close enough, I’ll take it 😉

I seriously have to drag myself to the gym, it is not an easy thing for me to do. On the other hand, it is extremely easy for me to make up excuses as to why I shouldn’t have to go! 🙂 The hardest part about going to the gym, is walking to my bus back to Jersey passing restaurant after restaurant and not going in and ordering anything and everything on the menu.

Well, 5 Boro Burgers is one of those places that I pass on a weekly basis. I passed it when it was under construction and was genuinly excited to find out it was a burger joint. Oh, the little things in life. My favorite thing about it was the fact that one whole side of the restaurant opens up and is such a nice breezy place to sit on 36th Street without being right in the middle of Herald Square. My husband and I had tickets to the Jimmy Fallon show one day and we were trying to think of a new restaurant to try that would be somewhat quick before the show. Lightbulb!!! Five Boro Burgers!

It was a perfect day to sit outside and take a huge bite out of an enourmously large burger only to waddle ourselves up to Rockefellar Center to NBC studios.

What I should have done, was taken a picture of the wings. Being that I am not a wings fan, I typically don’t even blog about them because how boring would that be for my readers to have to hear about something that I have no interest in! Boy was I wrong that day! Danny ordered Garlic Parmesean Wings, OUT OF THIS WORLD! I was in shock that I loved these wings (off the bone, none the less) as much as Danny did! I think I would go back just for them.

Then we moved on to the whole purpose of our visit…the burgers! They creatively named all of their burgers after the….drumroll please… Five Boros!

-Bronx Burger: Guacomole, Pico de Gallo, Mozzerella Cheese, Spicy Mayonnaise & Bacon

-Queens Burger: Roasted Red Peppers, Spanish Onions, Bacon, Mozzerella Cheese & Balsamic Dressing

-Brooklyn Burger: Grilled Onions, Cajun Seasoning, Steak Sauce, Crispy Bacon & Cheddar Cheese

-Manhattan Burger: Grilled Zucchini, Mushrooms, Onions, Vodka Sauce & Swiss Cheese

-Staten Island Burger: Grilled Pineapple, Green Pepper with a Sweet Rum Glaze and Pepper Jack Cheese

Im pretty sure we both got our own renditions of the above selections but left extremley satisfied. Off to the Jimmy Fallon show we go!

I love wine & cheese bars. I love the atmosphere, the wine and of course, the wide variety of different cheeses to try. I wasn’t really into wine bars before I met my husband. Certainly not because I don’t like wine or cheese, simply because I had never really been exposed to them.

We went to Grand Cru on our first date and I have to say I was blown away. Ever since then, we have made it a tradition to try a new wine and cheese bar each year on our anniversary. For Valentine’s Day this past year, we went back to where it all began at Grand Cru.

My absolute favorite cheese (for now…) is Tete de Moine. This is a Swiss cheese that has hints of nuts and dried fruit. It pairs well with fruit and almost any of the spreads that Grand Cru offers.

We have tried to recreate wine and cheese nights at home before (See Perfect Start to a Romantic Evening) but places like Grand Cru really know how to do it right. The myriad of breads, spreads, fruits and cheeses are right on. I could go for a glass of wine right now!

Yes, they went there. The Shannon Rose took that gutsy risk and decided to offer what is called a MURDER BURGER– a burger deep fried in Harp beer batter. So many different thoughts went through my head when I saw this on the menu. First of course being, “Um of course I want to eat that, a cheeseburger? fried? wow!” Of course the other thoughts consisted of not wanting to have a heart attack at 26 since I would probably be able to finish the entire thing. But still, a fried cheeseburger? It might be a risk I was willing to take. Solution? Danny ordered it instead 🙂

Let me step back and give a little history of the relationship I have with The Shannon Rose. The first time I experienced the restaurant was at the Clifton location. My friend Sophia introduced it to me and I loved the pub atmosphere, the drink menus and the bar food as well. They have a great selection of sliders and fries- exactly what everyone and anyone wants to eat at a bar. The problem was I didn’t live too close to Clifton so it was always a bit of a hike. We met friends there a couple of times when the UFC fights were on (to please the boys) and even though I had no interest in what was going on with the fights, I was satisfied with the rest of everything going on…music, friends, food and drinks!

When I was driving home one day and noticed that an old Fridays by our apartment was turning into a Shannon Rose-Ramsey, I was thrilled! A short while later, when we went there for the first time, I was impressed with what they had done to the place. It has been open for a few weeks now and it is STILL a full house every time I pass by. One of the coolest features is that they have live music at night with different bands. Really cool.

I am recommending to everyone out there to go and try the Shannon Rose Quesadilla. You will not be sorry! Not only is the quesadilla delicious but it has a secret, genius ingredient…spinach and artichoke dip. AMAZING.

So back to the burger…I always say you have to try everything once. (Well when it comes to food). And actually, I might not say that if I was having this conversation with lets say, Anthony Bourdain, however; try the burger. Then you let me know…is it true or false? Does everything fried  taste good?

I had heard of “The Tilted Kilt” but didn’t know too much about it other than it is often compared to Hooters. The combination of the fact that I am a girl and I don’t really love wings, has pretty much kept me away from Hooters. Don’t get me wrong, I would probably go if someone asked me tonight or tomorrow because I rarely say no to food/entertaining environments, it just has not made it to the top of my list yet.

Danny and I were planning on meeting my stepdad, Dave, my mom, my stepsister Leslie and her husband Matt in Baltimore to celebrate Dave’s birthday. Phew! That was a mouth-full! Did you get all of that? Leslie suggested the Tilted Kilt being that none of us had been there before and it would definitely be quite an experience.

I have to say my initial thoughts were a little skeptical considering we were going with our parents. I know we are all adults but I was hoping it wouldn’t be like those awkward moments when you go to the movies with your mom and all of the sudden male nudity in movies is legal (thank you Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and you are just sitting there, next to your mom, not saying anything and just staring. That is kind of what I was thinking this experience was going to be like.

Ill be honest, I was pleasantly surprised! It was a fun, pub like restaurant, almost like a Shannon Rose, except with really pretty waitresses wearing a little less clothing than normal. Now, people will also say that Hooters is known for the girls, not necessarily the food. I don’t know if that is true or not BUT I do know that the food at the Tilted Kilt was actually really good and the menu selection was more than plenty.

For all of you who have toyed with the idea of checking it out (or the waitresses out for that matter) I would recommend it! It’s a fun atmosphere with lots of good food and drinks to choose from.

Lastly, you have to go to find out the meaning of “Tilted Kilt” as it is written on the wall 🙂

I think by now all of you know I have a soft spot for Biggies. It’s funny because Danny and I lived about 10 minutes away for a year and only discovered it our last two months there. Now we live about 45 minutes away and find ourselves there at least once a month.

Their beer selection is incredible, personally I love Magic Hat #9 and it’s one of the only bars that I know I can always order one.

Enough about drinks, this is a food blog afterall and I’m here to tell you about the Ahi Tuna Tacos:)

It is offered on the appetizer section of the menu but it is the perfect size for an entree for one, ME! It’s a simple, light meal and I have found myself ordering it time and time again. It’s basically two grilled tortillas with fresh ahi tuna, lettuce, tomatoes and a delish wasabi mayonnaise.

Just talking about it makes me want more and I just had it last night:)

Sunday fun day at agozar

20111010-154235.jpg

Let’s just start with the fact that I am really excited about sharing this new brunch spot with everyone! (new to me.) Algozar Cuban Restaurant offers an incredible brunch with plenty of options as far as meals and unlimited sangria for 2 hours all at a great price! The fact that I was in great company and it was a gorgeous day weather wise only added to the perfection of the experience.

I went with the “not so classic” Eggs Benedict that consisted of Spanish Ham, poached eggs, Cuban bread and chipolte hollandaise sauce. Amazing.

It was also served with a small salad and yuca fries. The sangria special was definitely worth it as well 🙂

Guilty pleasure in a bottle

20110930-033325.jpg

This is how off my “healthy meter” is- I actually saw this soy vanilla chai drink at shop rite and though “wow that sounds delicious AND pretty healthy!” 19 g of protein? Even better!

I bought the close to $3 drink and I was right about one thing… It tasted amazing! The combination of vanilla and chai should incorporated into more things! Unfortunately I was not right when it came to my idea of healthy.

It does have a lot of calories… It is one of those labels that gives you the nutritional value per serving and since it’s one bottle you assume THAT is the serving but it ends up being like 35368 servings! Ok, I’m exaggerating, it’s only 2 but you get my point.

The good news is that it is so filling it almost acts as a meal replacement!

The point of this post is to introduce you to a very satisfying beverage for your taste buds and suggest occasionally treating yourself to one!:)

I have never been a coffee person. All of my life, people have been telling me, “wait until you are in college,” or “oh, wait until you start pledging a sorority,” and “you will start once you have a full time job.” Well all of those have come and gone and the only time I even sipped a coffee was when I went to Disney World with my mom and sister in middle school.  And that was just to see what all of the fuss was about! I don’t particularly care for the smell and I think that’s the part I can’t get past. So anyway, my next hurdle is everyone saying “wait until you have kids…” but I don’t have to worry about that any time soon!

Since coffee is not my drink of choice in the morning, I would like to share with you what I do love and would encourage you to try! I discovered Silk Soy Milk in college thanks to one of my roommates, Lindsay , and have been drinking it ever since. I prefer the light vanilla because it is perfect as a glass or over cereal…especially good with Speciak K Vanilla Almond cereal.

What drink do you like to start your day off with?

What is your morning beverage of choice?
