I have a thing for Taco Bell. Not many people do, or at least not many people are willing to admit it, but I do. In high school, my sister Christy and my friend Mattie and I used to hop in my ’96 Jeep Grand Cherokee after school and go to the nearest Taco Bell for a Cheesy Gordita Crunch. Oh but wait, my love started before then! This is actually terrible but my elementary school in Charlotte served Taco Bell on Tuesdays for a year and I would bring my $.80 for a chilito whenever I was allowed. Wow! Probably a good thing they didn’t keep Taco Bell Tuesdays for too long, otherwise I am not sure what kind of physical condition I may be in after weekly indulgences since age 8.

Side note: I have to say that from an advertising point of view, they have had some genius campaigns over the years. “Yo Quiero Taco Bell,” anyone remember that? Or “Think Outside the Bun?” Hmm I’m pretty impressed.

So, let’s get back on track. So over the past few years I would say I have kept my guilty drive through visits to a moderate level. Perhaps 3-5 times a year. But then something happened. The Doritos Nacho Cheese Taco happened. Are you kidding?? Did this just fall from heaven? And how did no one think of this before? The co-branding of Doritos and Taco Bell should have happened a long time ago. It happened for me on my way home from my friend Amy’s house one morning. Yes, morning. Not one of my proudest moments, but what can I say, those Taco Bells were ringing and I could not fight the resistance any longer.

Road tripping to Virginia, munching on Honey BBQ chips and what do I whip out? A beautiful chip with a natural heart stamped in the middle. LOVE ❤

What did I do after my five minute photoshoot with this object I found so fascinating? Took a bite out of it of course!

There are many things that I miss about living in the south. Real sweet tea might be one of the top 5 🙂

When I first moved here, I was shocked when I tried what I thought was going to be sweet tea.  Nestea? No. Raspberry Nestea? No! Iced tea with a handful of Splendas? No, thank you!

After exhausting my efforts of trying to find the beverage I longed for, I heard a McDonald’s commercial advertising southern “Sweet Tea!” Of course I was excited at first, but then I was skeptical. I have tried so many teas only to be let down time and time again. Plus, even though I was at the McDonald’s drive thru almost every week with my roommates during college, those days are over and I wasn’t sure I was ready to go back 😉

It didn’t take long until I found myself in that familiar path of the drive thru and ordering this proclaimed real deal.

I have to say, I have found it! My heart is complete again. I no longer have that void in my life. And I am strong enough to order the tea without a double cheeseburger every time! Success!

haha I was really just laughing while making these because they came out so ridiculous!…but fun, right? I am one of the ones that is now obsessed with the Bachelor. I watched it seasons ago but stopped watching when what’s his name picked Molly at the “After the Rose” episode, AFTER he picked Melissa during the season finale. People are so weird but I understand it’s tv and they most likely make you do things like that for ratings but it was annoying as a viewer.

Anyway, I don’t know why I started watching it again this season but I did. And I was hooked. I was Team Kasey B until the hometown visits, then I liked Nickie and now I really don’t even care anymore because for some reason the tabloids have already exposed the winner! What’s up with that?? What a buzz kill.

None the less, I am going to a “Bachelor Season Finale Party” at my friend Tara’s tomorrow. We both know who the winner is, but it will still be fun to see how the whole thing unfolds, and honestly just to critique everything 🙂 You are allowed to do that since they are on tv 🙂

I wanted to bring something fun to the “party” and even after google-ing different ideas, I couldn’t find anything fun! So then it occured to me that I should make cake pops of Ben and the final two, Lindzi and Courtney. Luckily, the girls have different colored hair because really that’s the only thing that distinguishes my cake pops from one another. (Good luck picking out which ones are Courtney and which ones are Ben since they pretty much have the same hair!)

What did you guys think of this season’s Bachelor?

Picture this: It is 2:00 pm. You are sitting at your desk and look at the clock and realize you still have a few hours left on a Monday. You are experiencing a typical Monday afternoon slump and you just need something, anything to get you through the rest of the day. Well most of the time, this “something” for me is a hot green tea, maybe peanut butter m&ms, maybe just a piece of gum? Well this particular day I had nothing.

It was going to be a long rest of the afternoon. That was, until this little sugar packed candy made it to my desk.

Hm. Starburst? Not my candy of choice but I’m feeling pretty open to new ideas today. The fact that it was purple was not only intriguing but made it seem like everything was going to be okay! What flavor is purple? Has anyone ever seen this before or am I the first? So many things going through my head at this point!

Unfortunately, this purple starburst was just a mini package of burst dreams. Royal Berry Punch, you may be a pretty package, but I hope next time I unwrap your wrapper, you surprise me with a red starburst instead.

In my last position, I had to order food for meetings every once in a while. Okay, one might think, not a big deal just look at the catering menus, pick out a few different types of sandwiches and carry on with your day. Well, that was not the case for me. Instead, I would do as I was asked but then I would actually go home and try to replicate the menus that I had been dreaming of ever since placing that order at 10 AM.

The life of a “forever hungry” person is not always easy 🙂 Pictured above are mini sandwiches I made for an Ugly Sweater Holiday Party we had at our house in December. It is a smoked turkey sandwich with cheddar cheese, spinach and cranberry mayonnaise on an onion roll. I added the onion roll because the flavors of onion and cranberry just mesh so well. Now I am not going to pretend like these were the best things I have ever made. Remember, I am learning!! They WOULD have been the amazing party sandwiches that I had so desperately hoped for if I didn’t prepare them so early. I was trying to make sure all of the food would be ready at the same time, therefore I made the sandwiches a couple of hours before everyone came over. So, by the time the guests had arrived, the bread was going a little stale.

OK all you experts out there, HELP! Should I put the bread in the refrigerator? Keep it out? How do you keep it fresh? They were still a hit but I have a little more learning to do before attempting to put them out before a group of hungry people again!

Part of the reason I started this blog was because I really do think I have an abnormal diet and I am okay with telling you that I really did have three hotdogs from three different places in 24 hours. That is pretty gross. I really don’t eat like that often, but I watch my diet the rest of the time and try to stick to my workout routine so I CAN do weird things like this unintentional mini hotdog marathon that occurred a couple of weeks ago.

So the morning after Ben’s Chili Bowl  , Danny and I packed our things, said good bye to Tom and Amy, and headed back into DC to do some touristy things. We had been warned that there were not too many restaurants near the Washington Monument, MLK Memorial or the Smithsonian Museums, but that’s what we had on our schedule for the day and figured we would be able to find something to eat since we are not picky eaters. (Big surprise, I know!)

After walking around for a while, we did start to get hungry and of course could not even find a little hole in the wall to slip into for a bite. We did want to try something cool and unique to DC, but given our location and quickly increasing appetite, we ended up just getting a plain hotdog from a stand. Was it good? Sure. Was it satisfying? Eh.

We continued on to the National Musesum of Natural History. Our last stop for the day was the Air and Space museum so we were pretty much staying in the same area for a while. A couple of hours later, we realized that the skimpy hotdog from earlier was not going to hold us over. Once we found the nice little “Atrium Cafe” at the museum, we felt a little relieved because there were so many options for lunch! It was a cafeteria style restaurant with pizza, sandwiches, salads, bbq and…..drumroll…. hotdogs! But these were not just any hot dogs, they were topped with BBQ and Coleslaw. Come on! How do you say no to that!?

It was just funny because out of all of the choices of food, we were both drawn to the hotdog and each ended up getting one. They were certainly tasty and I think I might try my own rendition next time we cook them on the grill. That might be a while though, because after 3 hotdogs in one weekend, I think I am good for a while!

Hotdog Número 3 for the Weekend!

OK…I know what you are thinking…”EW.” I thought the same thing when I uploaded this picture haha. HOWEVER, I did not think ew when this was handed to me, or when I was eating it! So stay open minded! I would like to introduce the one, the only, the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl chili dog in Washington DC.

Danny and I went to visit two of my very best friends Amy and Laura, and Amy’s husband, Tom in DC a couple of weekends ago and this is where we ended up after going to a few bars. I have to admit that I only ordered my hotdog with cheese, therefore this picture was either Tom, Amy or Laura’s hotdog. I think it’s funny because I didn’t realize how BAD the chili looked until I saw the picture I took even though you would think that is why I ordered mine without.

Because Ben’s Chili Bowl hotdogs are famous FOR their chili, and I just had cheese, I tried a bite of one of my friend’s and have to say that it really was dynamite. They had video footage playing of all of the celebrities that have been to Ben’s Chili Bowl over the years, including President Obama, and the history of the restaurant which was really neat.

Ben’s Chili Bowl is also featured on Serious Eats as one of the Top 29 Touristy Spots in America that are actually good. I have to agree! Stop by next time you are in DC for a good lunch, dinner or anytime snack 🙂

It’s good… I promise!

What is fun about “fun sized” candy?

20111031-194049.jpg

Seriously! What IS fun about a piece of candy that is just one bite? If I had anything to do with marketing campaigns for Mars or any other candy company for that matter, I would label the 6 inch long candy bars “fun size!” Even better, why not create a candy bar that is so big, you CAN’T even finish it in one sitting? That sounds more fun to me than the whole experience being over in about 30 seconds! There is nothing fun about seeing 10 fun sized wrappers next to you after you have filled yourself with candy bars!! 😉

Oprah has given her stamp of approval

20111006-130555.jpg

Get Fresh Bakery was giving away samples of their delicious, gluten-free, (yes I said delicious!) at BergenFest a couple of weeks ago. I have to say I don’t know too much about a Gluten free diet but I am eager to learn more about this lifestyle.

I have to admit I was first intrigued by the packaging because of the QR code. This is something I work on in my position as an Internet Marketing Coordinator and it’s always fun to see other companies implementing this new marketing strategy.

However, this blog is about food so back to the good stuff! I don’t think I have ever consciously had a gluten free cookie before but when I took my first bite of this one, I was expecting a plain flavor. Boy was I wrong! Get Fresh Bakery does a great job keeping all of the flavors of this Classic American favorite.

Oprah.com voted Get Fresh Bakehouse’s cookies as their favorite chocolate chip cookie, noting it was a “runaway winner!” What an honor! .

What I love even more about this story is that the whole concept came about when Jeff Robbin’s daughter was diagnosed with Celiac disease and he wanted to try his hand at gluten free baking. Way to go, Jeff! I would say this story is a success all around:)
